What is a postpartum doula?
The word "doula" comes from the ancient Greek meaning "a woman who serves." Today, doulas come in several forms, each supporting families through one of life's most profound transitions.
A postpartum doula steps in after the baby arrives. She supports the whole family through the critical weeks and months following birth, offering guidance on newborn care, feeding and lactation support, and helping parents adjust to their new roles with confidence and calm.
As a postpartum doula, my role is simple to describe but profound in practice. I am there to mother the mother. While the world focuses on the baby, I keep my eyes on you. Your recovery, your emotional wellbeing, your confidence as a new parent. The baby is always cared for and loved. But so are you.
A postpartum doula is not a night nurse, and not a medical professional. She is a knowledgeable, trained, compassionate presence in your home who understands what your body and mind are going through, and who knows how to help.
